The backstory
When Jake and Jen reached out to us at The Groove Room SF, they knew they wanted their wedding dance to reflect their athleticism, trust in each other, and unique bond. They were looking for a dance that wasn’t just about the moves but also about showcasing their deep connection. With a shared passion for creativity and a playful spirit, they were excited to collaborate with us to make their dance truly their own.
The first meeting
Before committing to any classes, we scheduled a sit-down meeting at the studio to get to know them better. As soon as we met Jake and Jen, our instructor, Tais, could feel their whimsical, indie vibe. Their readiness to contribute creative ideas and their openness to collaboration made it clear that this would be a fun and unique journey. We discussed their wedding vision—where it would take place, the mood they envisioned—and quickly got to work designing a dance that felt as free-spirited as they are.
Overcoming challenges
We encountered a small challenge with Jen’s wedding dress. She had planned to wear a long, silky gown with a wrist loop to hold the train. Knowing this could limit mobility, we carefully modified the dance moves to accommodate the restricted movement, ensuring Jen could move freely while still feeling comfortable and graceful.
The road to the big day
Jake and Jen reached out to us about three months before their wedding, and after our initial meeting, they immediately booked a package of 10 lessons. With a tight timeline, we set up a regular weekly schedule to make the most of the time leading up to their big day.
But as with all wedding planning, unexpected hurdles appeared. Two weeks before the wedding, Jen suffered a minor injury. Rather than miss lessons, we decided to make adjustments. Jen came to watch while Jake and Tais continued to work on the choreography, with Tais stepping in as Jake’s partner for the final moves. Their flexibility and dedication to finishing strong was inspiring.
A magical moment
One of the standout moments of Jake and Jen’s dance was a lift where Jen jumps up and sits on Jake’s shoulders. We were so light up in the air that the wedding venue’s tent couldn’t contain us—if you watch closely in the video, you’ll see Jen’s hair brush the soft cover of the tent. We think it adds an extra touch of magic to the moment!
